Designing & Making Silhouettes | Encasement

I found the two tutor review that we had recently has really helped me learn to discuss my work at a professional level. This style of tutorial helped me understand the importance of explaining processes and outcomes throughout the unit to individuals who have never seen my work before, as well as being selective with presentation and discussing key elements. The feedback I got from this tutorial was to move forward with garment preparation, as my aim is to have a garment made by the end of the term. I needed to change my illustration style so they reflect the way I work, and also to start working on a stand to see what kind of shapes and styles of garments work best on the body with the fine silk yarn I plan to use.

Using Jersey fabric I started to pin and drape material, designing the vest top I plan to knit.

I plan to make a sleeveless knitted top with a high neck and loose fitting around the body, with lace holes in an off circular shape at the front of the top over the breasts and also small lace hole details on the back panels. The bottom of the top will overlap and fasten. The lace holes will communicate encasement of the body by revealing areas.

I have been conducting garment research to gain inspiration for the style of straps to fasten my design. I was inspired by this dress (source: Pinterest) and how the straps are the only detail on the top of the back, creating a sophisticated summer style.

Reflecting upon my silhouette I am happy with the outcome, however in order to represent the detail in my collection of samples I need to create another silhouette such as the waistcoat which will add texture and volume to the look. In tutorials I was encouraged to look back at my sketchbook and find the colours I design with that are missing in my samples.

I am particularly drawn to the elements of gold as it adds a sense of sophistication & excitement. In order to push my designs forward I plan to paint gold ink onto my knits and foil sections. Furthermore, I want to play more with texture and delicacy & think about how I can add a higher volume of feathers into my knits. Zuhair Murads’ feathered jacket (below) has really intrigued me, I am encouraged me to see whether feathers in my knits could work on garment.
