Dash & Miller

The talk from Dash + Miller really inspired me as a textile student. Their journey from graduation to where they both are now gave me a more detailed insight into the industry and how tough/rewarding it can be. I was fascinated by their weave designs and this encouraged me to become more experimental and add an element of structure in my designs as I feel I sometimes keep my work quite 2D & flat.
I loved how their work had been picked up from designers and translated into fashion garments.

I loved these two designs as they both appear linear with decorative elements, communicating such femininity. The garments inspired me to introduce a similar colour pallette within my weaves; adding peach, pinks and coral shades. Below I practiced a plain weave while looping graduated embroidery thread in and out of the warp. I like the stitched element this gives and the comparison between the woven and loose thread, however it lacks creativity slightly, as I continue weaving I hope to add more colour and experiment with scale.

In my previous projects I have always worked in quite a neat and simplistic manner, keeping my designs tidy and also sticking to a strict colour palette. Within unit X I want to branch out of this style I usually work in and get out of my comfort zone slightly.
The colour of yarns in my warp structure is inspired from my storyboard and consists of cream, yellow, pale blue and black. I am going to focus on my weft colours to add character into my designs, and develop shades and colour choice through artist research, images and drawings with a range of media.
