Developing my concept for the 4 week Live Brief for Bradford Textiles, I wanted to bring through urban elements from my summer work: lines and scattered shapes. I had a general idea of "boundaries" but was finding it challenging refining the concept.
In tutorial I was prompted to make a word storm and conduct primary research with the selected words in my head: limit, inhibit, restrictions, control, confine.
Conducting visual research this week has pushed me forward in terms on sketchbook development. moving forward with attention to shape and texture. My primary images represent typical boundaries that are used and control objects/movement in a day to day basis. I edited the images down to black and white to give a stronger visualisation to the liner elements: the images were taken in a rural area therefore the colours in them were quite earthy.
Taking my colour scheme into consideration with my concept, I thought about bringing in colours with restricted connotations, e.g. green - go/safe/positive. Taking colour from my visual images, I wanted to carry through different shades of grey into my knitted samples and it's an urban colour, then interrupting with hints of green and orange.
Whilst I've been drawing I have focused on looking at pattern, line quality and repetitive shapes. I see myself pushing this forward into knitted samples with a context for fashion by creating a fabric with structure and movement which would work on the body, whilst revealing different shapes and colour through techniques.
I have been referring to the technical files in the knit room and experimenting in order to create movement in my samples. The contoured fabric technique is working well, relating to my visual research, however the technique is very sensitive to yarn quality, especially mohair, therefore I am experimenting with what textures and weights can be used.
