Group Crit

The group crit we had at the end of the term really helped me develop new ideas and realise my strengths and weaknesses within my work. Furthermore I found this crit a great opportunity to see other students work and to be introduced into new techniques/different ways of working.

While showing my work and reflecting, I discovered positive aspects in my work; texture has always been really important to me within textiles and using mohair in my weaves gave my work more character and a 3 dimensional quality. Similarly, my other successful weaves are those where I have used yarn to inlay, trapping colour and creating loose ends. Alternatively some of my weaves weren't as creative as they lacked dimensional quality, shape and some had quite a bland colour scheme that doesn't reflect my research as well.

The feedback I was given by other students & tutors encouraged me to be more experimental and use my successful weave ideas in embroidery. I was told to go crazy with scale, use more contrasting textures and experiment with colour combinations. Now moving onto embroidery within Unit X, I am going to try and incorporate these qualities while stitching. I think the key to development is to restrict my colour scheme and use yarn while stitching in order to create a similar effect.
