Moving Forward

When starting the unit I was still unsure of which specialism I wanted to be in. I knew it was construct but I’ve always been torn between knit & weave. I had a tutorial with Lesley to speak about my development within the unit and what are my next steps. When looking at my work we identified some really strong elements within my work; looking at edges in my work and the material they’re drawn in. My linear sketches were definitely the strongest so Lesley encouraged me to repeat these areas, creating & repeating pattern. I felt at this point I was struggling to cultivate my work, but this was because I was lacking in contextual research. I started to look at artists such as Wayne Theobauld and Candy Jernigan, who link to the subject of Urban Influences in different ways. What I enjoyed about thier work is the negative space they use to compose their drawings and also the simplicity of colour.

In this tutorial Lesley and I spoke about which area of construct to specialise in, and I started to realise that I was finding it easier to translate my drawing into knit techniques than into weave. I was prompted to have a tutorial with Laura to get another opinion of my work. In between this time I worked with an open mind and look contextually into both areas but noticed I would be better suited specialising in knit.
