Exploring Designers, Yarns & Colour

Due to the fact I wasn’t sure which area I was going to specialise in, I felt I was a bit behind in general. I started to feel stuck as in to where to develop my work, then in my tutorial Laura explained I needed to make the "Urban Influences" my own, look deeper into areas I want to develop.

I created a mind map and came out with some specific elements to concentrate on: patterns, lines, circles, edges, overlapping, reflection, repeats.

In my next tutorial I was encouraged to develop my sketchbook further. My work is split in two very different styles; I have some drawings which are vibrant & colourful, but I also draw in a very minimal spacial style. I want to bring both into my samples; therefore I am going to create two collections of knit samples in this unit.
I haven’t been too keen on my colour palette as I have such a range of colours from drawings in my sketchbook. I want to start using mohair to create the smudged effect that’s similar in my sketchbook, yet I really want to play more with textures in this project. I started to experiment by adding silver monofilament into my knits, inspired by Rahib by elongsted stitch, but as the yarn was so fine it would snap. To seek more inspiration in colour I am going to research further into artists and types of yarns that I could introduce in my work.

 Maison Rabih Kayrouz

Maison is a Lebonese fashion designer who creates exceptional gowns for women. Since 2009 he has been working in Paris alongside the finest French artisans in order to create luxury clothing. I came across Maisons work on Pinterest then decided to do further research into his collections.

SS14 RAY RTW
this collection concentrates on sensuality and motion, dubbing’s of light and mirrored effects. I loved the use of material throughout this collection, especially the aluminium and chiffon. These aspects communicate a sense of reflection and I was particularly drawn to this due to the same aspect I had been looking at in my primary research images. Similarly I was inspired by the drapes in the fabric and the triangular shapes within these; I feel there is a really successful contrast between the metallic and sharp blocks of shape.

FASHION WEEK 1314 'WAITING' RTW

I was also inspired by the colour scheme within Maisons Fashion Week collection. They are very pure colours; chalk white, bright orange & royal blue. Similarly I’d been using this range of colours within my sketchbook. My attention was also grasped by the structure of some of the garments in this collection; blocky & repetitive. I would like to try and create some similar samples using a range of techniques perhaps by hooking up, or weaving in.
