While researching into possible themes for Locating, I was really interested in looking into the idea of natural form and decaying. I started off with the idea of “neglect”. This was a broad key word that I started to branch lots of ideas off: lost, forgotten, abandoned, displaced, decayed, disrepair, natural form, plants, insects, animals, landscapes, habitats, humans, urban, broken, behavior, self destruct. I gathered a range of secondary images that reflect this theme to discuss in this weeks tutorial.
In the tutorial we discussed how to push this idea further, make it more specific and think of other areas to look into within the topic. I was encouraged to look into historical elements, places abandoned/protected by law, natural disasters such as 9/11 and what has been left behind, furthermore the result of devastations, nature taking over and the story behind this.
During the week I began to look into abandoned locations. I came across images that photographer Rolland Miller had taken of NASA Launch Sites in the USA that were no longer in use.
I was drawn to these images due to the decay and detail contrasted with negative space, also the linear elements and abstract shapes. I plan to find more visual research with similar qualities, which I can then start to develop within my sketchbook.
