Abandonment | Initial Research

To continue developing my concept of "Abandonment" over the christmas period I have been conducting further visual research. At first I wasn't sure how to gain primary imagery as I wasn't sure of where to go which would reflect neglected elements. I decided to manipulate this idea by looking at locations which have and eerie feel to them, and also locations that are in a state of destruction.

This is an image I had taken previously of an old school. It is not an abandoned location as such but the use of Black & White edit and shades of light within the photographs communicate an eerie vibe. Elements of these images I will take and develop further in my work are the blocky shapes and contrast of black, grey and white.

Similarly, There was an abandoned house near where I lived which had been destructed by a fire. As it was still in a sustained state I managed to gain visual research from the location.

This is one of the key images I gained from this location. What really inspires me is the contrast from the black to white and the detail that's happening in between, such as peeling wood and lighter cracks and lines showing through.

This image communicates an eerie feel, the structure within the window panels is such a strong element with the light beaming through, against the black burnt walls.

There is a lot of white in this image which I'm not keen on, yet the linear qualities on the left is interesting, where the walls diffuse from a dusky grey to the white wall, showing the state it was before the destruction.

With this body of visual research I will develop it by editing, manipulating and looking at specific areas to draw from in my sketchbook with a muted colour pallette and looking at subject matters of before and after.
