Locating Evaluation

I have developed independent thinking on my blog and sketchbook in order to communicate the informed choices I have made throughout my practice. At first I struggled with time management and working on two projects at once, as Branding and Abandonment were very different styles and context, yet I overcame this my scheduling my time and ensuring each week I was pushing both projects further.

During Locating I have demonstrated the ability to explore ideas, the strongest evidence of this is through my sampling. I have taken elements from my drawings, images and contextual research then re created these into knitted samples. I am really pleased with my progress on the Dubied machine this unit, I have gained so much more confidence with techniques and yarn choices and tried to push the boundaries by using alternate materials. I have reflected upon my strengths and weaknesses on my blog, and also changes in my sketchbook communicate this. During this unit reflection upon my colour palette has been key. Lighter toned yarns such as purple, blue and white reflected strengths in my sketchbook yet didn’t communicate my concept and visual research clearly. I made the decision to change my colours back to black, grey, and bronze in order to give my sampling an eerie feel & to reflect burning and decay. Inlaying mohair into my samples reflected high fashion, giving a sophisticated and premium look. Furthermore using paper yarn, paper and matchsticks in my collection made it more extreme and unique for my target audience.

Within my Branding collection I really struggled with colour choices. Black and yellow are really key colours for Fendi yet it was difficult to get the right proportion and composition in my knits, as I didn’t want it to look bumblebee like. I overcame this by contrasting black and yellow with grey in order to break it up and create a more sophisticated collection. I have created samples for the appropriate audience during this project, selecting techniques that draw attention to blocks of shape and bold colour.

I have shown evidence of reflection throughout the unit on my blog for both Abandonment and Branding. I have developed my concepts by experimenting and recording in my sketchbook, such as playing with materials, manipulation and yarn choices. I developed this in my sampling within Abandonment by choosing fine yarns and knitting on the fine gauge Dubied in order to create delicate samples that diffuse in colour and contain alternative materials.

I have built networks in this unit by engaging with the live brief “Branding”, creating a collection of S/S knitwear samples suited to the premium brand Fendi. Additionally I have prepared a CV in order to apply for placements that I plan to undertake over the summer period, and have been in touch with Oasis Press Office, as I would like to gain experience within the fashion buying team before 3rd year. Lastly I have created a professional Instagram account to present my work and begin to build networks within the industry.
